The Run for the Animals 3K is a unique race, not just because of its cause, but because of its roots.

The race will be held at Monmouth Battlefield Park in Manalapan on June 16 and will the benefit the Monmouth County SCPA in Eatontown. Owners and their dogs are invited to participate in the fourth annual race, which also includes a 40-yard Doggie Dash for canines.

The idea behind the Run for the Animals race came from Robert Murphy, 16, who attends Freehold Township High School and started the race four years ago.

Study Indicates Some Animals Can’t Outpace Climate Change

A study released Monday by the US National Academy of Sciences indicates that some mammals might be unable to keep up with environmental changes. Aaron Kunz explains what that means for the Pacific Northwest.

The study looked at nearly 500 species in North and South America. It determined that close to 10 percent will not be able change habitat in order to keep pace with climate change.

Co-author Carrie Schloss is a researcher at the University of Washington. She says the animals most at risk live in tropical forests like those found in South America. Mammals living here in the Northwest seem to be better suited to adapt to climate change.

Like many people, I was intrigued by autistic professor Temple Grandin after reading the essay Oliver Sacks wrote about her in his collection, An Anthropologist on Mars. Grandin studies animal science at Colorado State University and is theauthor of several books about herself, about autism, and about the minds of animals. Among her many achievements has been the design of a more humane system for slaughtering cattle.

You know about the economic gap between the haves and have-nots. Now apparently there is a growing leisure gap, according to researchers.

A study by the nonpartisan National Bureau of Economic Research found that highly educated, well-off Americans have less time on their hands to gallivant than others with less education.

The study, reported by CNN Money, says that since 1985, weekly leisure time for highly educated men, who have more than 12 years of education and generally have higher incomes, declined 1.2 hours to 33.2 hours by 2007. The leisure hours of men with little education climbed to 39.1 hours, up 2.5 hours during the same period. The same pattern was observed...
